Florida State

Paul Cottle, Simon Capstick, and David Van Winkle are teaching General Physics A (Mechanics, with calculus, Capstick and Van Winkle), General Physics B (Electricity and Magnetism, with calculus, Cottle) and the Physics of Light and Sound (Van Winkle). The classroom has 8 tables with 9 chairs and three small footprint desktop computers per table. Group whiteboards (24" x 30") are projected onto three screens along the walls using the document camera you see in front of the left wall whiteboard (the small boards are rested on the pen rail). The room has a dedicated storage room for lab equipment. The General Physics SCALE-UP courses are taught in parallel with, and as an alternative to a traditional course, but physics majors and pre-engineering students are advised to take them.

Normalized gains on the FCI (34 questions, including energy concepts) from the first (Spring 2008) and second (Summer 2008) implementations of General Physics A were ~50%. Two 72-seat sections of General Physics A and one 72-seat section of General Physics B will be offered in the Fall 2008 semester.
